D. August Baertlein

I made a career of writing software by day while scribbling stories by night, a combo made even odder by the fact that I started my adult life as a marine biologist/geneticist. I got my Ph.D. ever so long ago, but I still love science, especially the biological variety. Now my SciFi and Fantasy is full of it! Science, I mean.
For my last science gig I worked at U.C. Berkeley in the Plant Pathology department where I genetically engineered both bacteria and plants for greater frost tolerance in crop plants.
When our son came along, spending long hours in the lab no longer seemed a good choice for our family. I took up computer programming, and wrote stories in my spare time to release all that pent-up creative energy. My novel, Synapse, was finally published after years of work, with other projects waxing and waning throughout the process. More books are in the works!
After retiring from IBM, I thoroughly enjoyed working with wildlife at CALM (California Living Museum), a rehabilitation facility and zoo outside Bakersfield, Ca. During those years I lived with one favorite (only) son, one pretty great (only) husband and various cats, dogs, rats, birds and uninvited critters in a one-bedroom cabin outside Lake Hughes, California. Most of us have now moved to Prescott, Arizona, where the adventure continues!
